“For me, these two are two with a very closely similar existence. (…) Even if they were to change places with each other, they surely would have taken the same actions with the same feelings. That’s why the color of their eyes is the same blue.” - Naoko Takeuchi

this is really lovely. this relationship does not get enough love. luna’s been there since day one, sleeps with her, has to be her greatest supporter and worst enemy. i think luna’s always felt a great amount of empathy for usagi, because she’s also young and scared out of her wits and can’t imagine being in her place (or losing her again). i think she still feels guilty about what happened 1,000 years ago. i think luna can be just as rash, insecure, and impulsive as usagi sometimes. being stern and trying to maintain pragmatism is how she handles all the ~feelings~.

In the anime, I very much get the sense that Luna often felt like she was the only one keeping the trains running, that she was the only one who took things seriously and planned ahead.  Once the other Sailor Senshi came along (especially Ami), she had a bit more help, but I imagine it often fell to her to do recon and she felt pretty helpless with not being able to actually fight.  She always had to stay behind, only able to pray that Usagi-tachi made it home safely and that the bad guys wouldn’t win. She’s also the one who lives with Usagi, probably the one who saw the most of Usagi’s tears and depression and heartache whenever she had to go through difficult trials.  She was definitely hard on Usagi sometimes, but only because she obviously cared so much and because she knew how desperate their circumstances were.  Usagi never really thinks things through, she just goes with her heart, and that is one of her greatest strengths!  But Luna’s more pragmatic and realistic, she worries so much more because she can imagine all the things that could go wrong, because she’s seen things go so wrong before. This is mostly in the anime, of course, their relationship in the manga is a little different and I can see what Naoko means by how they’re such similar people, almost mirror images of each other in a lot of ways.  But, in both versions, they have an important relationship that I suspect doesn’t get a lot of attention because Luna’s usually in cat form and cats aren’t as interesting to talk about.  And I do dearly love how much they care for each other and always support each other.  ♥
